Scrooge Wore Spurs Janet Dailey 9780821772256 Books Reviews

One of Janet Dailey's best! The children are just delightful, especially the twins. This is a true must read.
Four Christmas Angels definitely help to bring out the best in Eben. He's a bit rough around the edges, but don't give up on him. Maggie is a delightfully strong character. She doesn't let Eben get away with anything. There are plenty of laughs, some tears, some growing pains, etc. Generally a very enjoyable book.
Toss a passel of kids at a serious bachelor, who dedicates all of his time to his lifetime vocation of keeping the family ranch, and you have a recipe for disaster, and humor. Janet Dailey weaves a great tale with the growth of a man to meet the challenges that are thrown his way, that he never wanted, and never could have anticipated. Watching him more than live up to the responsibility is inspiring. Watching their unorthodox holiday celebration is a scream.
This one never did sit well with me. In fact, I got a real bad attitude towards the lead male character, Eben, concerning his tendency to tell the kids he didn't want them.... and I never got over it! lol Eben was a little bit over the edge in his bitterness. I think if it hadn't been for that, if Eben could have just attempted to not let those kids see his bitterness, I could have enjoyed the other characters in the story. Anyway, the whole story was about Eben becoming human again, which he did eventually but not before he really tore up that little boy. It just broke my heart... I guess I'm too much of a mom to put up with someone like him; in my book, it's never the kids fault... they shouldn't have to pay for adults mistakes & they should be loved & protected regardless of the circumstances. I had a really bad attitude through out most of the book! lol
As hard as the land he works, rancher Eben MacCallister has devoted his life--and sacrificed his happiness--to making his ranch profitable. Now, with an unscrupulous banker threatening to foreclose on his land, Eben can only hope that his late sister has left him the money she took years ago before she abandonded him. But Eben's inheritance is a far cry from what he expected four hungry kids with enough sass, energy, and questions to make ranching look easy...

Maggie knows she she shouldn't laugh, but the sight of Eben trying to feed a squawking baby while corraling three more untamed little ones is poetic justice. Once, Maggie hoped to raise kids of their own with Eben...before life hardened his heart and turned them from lovers into sparring parteners. She can't imagine how Eben will become both mommy and daddy to a pack of wounded kids. But at Christmas, wishes have a way of coming true, and hearts have a wy of healing--especially when love is waiting patiently under the tree...
It's refreshing to read romance novels that feature protagonists in their 40's! This book had an excellent storyline about a man hardened by his life's circumstances and negative relationship dynamics, whose problems keep snowballing until they threaten to bury him. It takes four innocent children and a patient and forgiving woman to teach him about what's really important in life - family and love, not financial success. A wonderful lesson for the holiday season!

However, this was definitely NOT frilly, light and entertaining reading. The dialogue was almost 100% verbal sparring and arguing. The tension-level in the house was wound so tightly, with way too much counter-productive hostility, resentment, rebelliousness, bitterness and stubborness. I was quite exhausted and mentally drained reading it - it's borderline migraine-inducing! The way Eban reacted to the children, especially Dillon, was downright abusive. Although I applaud the purpose of the story, this was definitely not an enjoyable, relaxing, escapist, romantic or humorous book to read.
Banker Billy Joe Wilder uses a stipulation in the loan agreement with Eben MacCallister that forces the rancher to furbish a quarter of a million dollar payment within sixty days or lose the Star Ranch which has been in his family for over a century. Not long afterward, Maddie Williams visits Eben. Maddie, a wealthy widow and owner of a dude ranch, loved Eben. Two decades ago she thought she would be his wife, but he cherished his ranch more than he did her.

Attorney Spencer Davenport arrives with four young children including an infant. The four-year-old twin girls announce that both of their parents are in heaven. Eben's estranged sister named their uncle as their guardian. Seven-year-old Dillon realizes that Eben does not want them even if they share blood. Maddie and the four youngsters begin teaching their Uncle Scrooge how to open his heart to love.

SCROOGE WORE SPURS is an engaging modern day ranch twist to the classic Dickens tale with the children serving as surrogates ghosts. The story line will warm cold hearts as Eben learns to laugh and love. However, the theme of the tale leans more towards a second chance at love rather then the single icy cold cowboy learning to love while struggling with nurturing and caring for four youngsters. Though it seems as if Janet Dailey never fully decided which way to take the plot, fans of contemporary ranch romance will appreciate this version of A Christmas Carol.
